SUPERMARKET 2020: Applications Open

From 31 August to 1 October 2019 we welcome artist-run spaces to apply online at www.supermarketartfair.com.
Supermarket 2020 will be held 22–26 April 2020.
(Public dates 23–26 April.)

Applications to Supermarket Talks & Performance and to Professional Networking Participants’ programme (PNP) will be open 1–30 November 2019.

What is Supermarket?

Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair is an international artist-run art fair that provides a showcase of artists’ initiatives from all over the world. Supermarket's aim is to display unique projects and ideas, create opportunities for new networks on Swedish and international art scene, and share the passion and vitality that are present in the independent the art world.

Supermarket has been arranged in Stockholm since 2007 by a small group of organisers most of whom are artists themselves. It is a development of Minimarket, which was held at Konstnärshuset ('the artists' house') in 2006 in reaction to a new commercial art fair Market. The project has rapidly evolved from a modest group of local initiatives to an international art fair that has made its mark and helped firmly establish Stockholm on the art world map. Over the years it has featured exhibitors from more than 60 countries, all part of a growing international trend of artist-run galleries, project spaces, artist collectives and other artists' initiatives

Supermarket is not just a regular art fair. In parallel to the main exhibition we have the Supermarket Talks & Performance programme, the Professional Networking Participants programme, Supermarket Meetings, Supermarket Forum and our internationally distributed Supermarket Art Magazine.

Who can apply?

Any artist-run galleries that regularly stage public exhibitions in their own exhibition spaces and other artists' initiatives that arrange exhibitions, projects or events with invited artists can apply to exhibit at Supermarket 2020. Individual artists or artists' groups founded only for applying to Supermarket will not be accepted. Each year we exhibit artist-run initiatives from more than twenty-five countries around the world.

Is it possible to choose from different size of exhibition booths?

Yes, there are four options that you can choose from:

Large exhibition stand (approx. 12–13 sqm, for example 2x6 m or 2.5x5 m)

Small exhibition stand (approx. 6 sqm, for example 2x3 m)

Presentation stand (approx 2 sqm, for example 1x2 m)

You will be able to find the prices for the stands during the application process on our website. (See below 'How do I apply?)

How do I apply?

You apply online at www.supermarketartfair.com. You will find the application link there 31 August–1 October (not before or after). The application is done in four steps:

  • Sign up for a user account on our website and sign in. If you already have an account, then you only sign in.
  • Fill in the applications details; information about your space/initiative and information about your planned exhibition at Supermarket 2020.
  • Do not forget to enclose additional attachments, e.g. images, videos or other relevant information, since this allows us to make a better selection.
  • Submit your application.

How does the selection process work?

After the application deadline Supermarket's project team gathers all the applications and materials and the selection process begins. The assessement period takes several weeks where we go through every application, check that you filled in all the compulsory information, go through your additional materials (images, links, project proposal etc.) and then individually comment on each application. After this there is a group assessement where we make the selection of usually about fifty to seventy galleries.

The pre-selection results for Supermarket 2020 will be announced by 31 October 2019.

If you need a preliminary letter of invitation to support your funding application prior to the official announcement of the selected galleries, please contact us as this is possible.

What are the dates for Supermarket 2020? When do the exhibitors need to arrive and leave?

There are slightly different dates for the exhibitors and for the public:

The dates for the exhibitors are 22–26 April 2020 (Wednesday to Sunday). Wednesay 22 April is a special day, when the art fair is closed to the public and only accessible to the exhibitors, press and invited guests from the art sector. On this day, Press preview, Professional preview and Supermarket Forum take place. You can choose to take part in Forum but it is not compulsory (see special section further below).

Please note:
As an exhibitor you need to arrive several days in advance to be able to set up your booth and have it ready for 22 April. You need to be present and your booth ready during the exhibitor dates 22–26 April.
We highly recommend that you arrive on Sunday 19 April / Monday 20 April and leave on Monday 27 April / Tuesday 28 April.

The public opening days are 23–26 April (Thursday to Sunday).
This is when the art fair is open to the general public.

I am not part of an artist-run space. –Can I apply as an individual?

As an individual you cannot apply as Exhibitor but instead you can apply to the Professional Networking Participants programme (PNP). As a PNP you do not exhibit but take part in a special programme of talks, seminars and guided tours. You get invited to the Meetings programme, Exhibitor gatherings, Exhibitor party, Supermarket Forum and have access to the VIP Exhibitor lounge.

The applications to PNP will be open 1–30 November on www.supermarketartfair.com. Please note the different date for the applications – not the same date as Exhibitors applications.

For more information get in touch with the PNP coordinator Lucie Gottlieb at lucie@supermarketartfair.com.

I am a performance artist, can I also take part in Supermarket?

Yes, Supermarket Talks & Performance programme is just for you. Performance artists, audio-visual artists with a great proposal for an event, guest speakers with a topic to discuss or project to present – you are welcome to apply.

The application to Talks & Performance programme will open 1–30 November on www.supermarketartfair.com. (Please note the different date for the applications – not the same date as Exhibitors applications.)

For more information get in touch with the Talks & Performance coordinator Franziska Sperling at franziska@supermarketartfair.com.

I have many more questions regarding Supermarket and the application process. Who can I contact?

You can get in touch with us with any questions by email at info@supermarketartfair.com.

Supermarket 2020 Theme: 'Fabricated'

The yearly theme for SUPERMARKET 2020 is ’Fabricated’.

The postmodern world is a relative one, where anything can be labelled as true, beautiful or valid. Black and white is off the grid – long live the greyscale (as far as it is the right shade of grey). Yet how can one find the truth if there is no non-truth nor any interest in defining it?

The world surrounding us is fabricated for our individual needs, beliefs and comfort, and constantly updated to keep us satisfied. The media and enterprises feed us with information directed by their own or their governments’ agendas that are rarely questioned. The consumer has only limited means, time or will to check them or to contemplate them in depth.

We all make a choice of information sources that fit into our worldviews, we listen to facts that we want to listen to in order to feel in control of our up-to-date knowledge and to hide the unwillingness to accept someone else’s facts. Because we like to think that we intentionally choose our sources of facts, the facts are smoothly shaped for us to choose them be it through clever advertising, social media our enforcing new policies.

How is information produced and consumed in a world that is centred on relativism, simplified communication, efficiency of input and output, opportunistic manipulation with facts and soft censorship?

Supermarket Forum 2020

Supermarket Forum is a networking event for the exhibitors, staff and special invited guests – curators, art organisers, art institutions and galleries from the Swedish art sector. The programme allows the exhibitors to meet the representatives of the local art scene, present their projects in depth and talk to other participants and guests within a simple framework focused on establishing new connections.
Participation in Supermarket Forum is voluntary. You can choose to take part in the Forum for the additional cost of 500 SEK (625 SEK incl. VAT), which covers the cost for organisation and includes vegetarian lunch.
Due to limited space only one representative per exhibiting stand can participate (you can swap the pass if needed).

Supermarket Forum 2020 will take place on Wednesday 22 April 13–18. During this time, the art fair will be closed to the public.
The programme will be followed by the Professional preview of the art fair from 18–22.

Supermarket Art Magazine

Every year, in parallel to the art fair, Supermarket publishes the Supermarket Art Magazine. The magazine is an important part of Supermarket's public activities, where we share ideas and issues from the artist-run world, give voice to local and international contributors and introduce artists' initiatives in interviews and short snippets. The magazine is formulated around a specific theme that changes every year.

The magazine is distributed internationally and available to read online.
You can browse through the previous issues of Supermarket Art Magazine here.

If you would like to contribute to Supermarket Art Magazine 2020 please get in touch with the editor-in-chief Alice Máselníková at alice@supermarketartfair.com.
